Security warning: Mediatek-based phones could be facing a potential security hole

*** like Antelife UK on Facebook for your chance to win a FREE 5200mAh External Power Bank Charger ***

French blogger Korben has discovered that certain smartphones with Mediatek chipsets seem to shut down and reset themselves upon receiving an equals symbol “=” (without the quotation marks) via text message.

This is not so much a security hole in that there is a risk of data being compromised, but it makes phones vulnerable to remote attacks because being repeatedly spammed with the equals symbol could render a user’s phone unusable, or receiving such a text message during a phone call could terminate the call.

An incomplete list of smartphones affected by the flaw is available below:

  • Wiko Stairway
  • Wiko Darkmoon
  • Wiko Dark Side
  • Wiko Darknight
  • Wiko Iggy
  • Wiko Ozzy
  • Wiko Darfull
  • Wiko Cink King
  • Wiko Cink Five
  • Wiko Cink Peax
  • Wiko Cink Peax 2
  • Wiko Cink Slim
  • Alcatel One Touch Idol X
  • Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra
  • Alcatel One Touch 997D
  • Alcatel One Touch Pop C3 (4033D)
  • Alcatel One Touch S-Pop (4030D)
  • Alcaltel One Touch Star (6010D)
  • Zopo ZP950
  • Acer Liquid E 2 DUO
  • Fairphone
  • Archos 40 Titanium

You can test if your own Mediatek-based smartphone is susceptible by messaging an equals symbol to yourself.

According to the blog wiity, the solution to this is fairly simple, in that all the user has to do is download an alternative messaging app to handle SMS messages rather than use the standard one that comes with the phones. Still, this is an extremely strange flaw that could prove to be a major hassle if an attacker attempts to exploit it.

Korben discusses and demonstrates the flaw in the video below:

How to get native root for your Redmi Note (WCDMA/TD) via Recovery (Updated for 23.0)

Buy the Redmi Note today from : http://goo.gl/fkJAxq ( use code “antelife2014uk” for $10 off your order)

This simple step-by-step guide is based on the approach taken for Redmi 1S, but of course adapted for Redmi Note.
It has been successfully tested on Redmi Note TD by @B2204 with MIUI JHECNBA17.0 and on Redmi Note WCDMA by @discodave with MIUI JHDCNBE23.0.

It does NOT rely on a program like VRoot.exe running on your Windows computer; only one or two zip files are installed via the built-in recovery of Redmi Note.

  • This is a safe process, but I am not responsible for anything bad that happens to your phone
  • After enabling root with this approach the system cannot be upgraded by OTA
  • But you can upgrade by installing again the stable version via recovery without wipe; after this root is gone and you can upgrade to a new firmware and most probably execute the same steps to root again

By flashing the attached zip files via recovery the su binary gets installed, proper permissions are set and the MIUI version number x.0 is appended to x.0.1 so that the firmware behaves like a developer version and unlocks the stock root.
Root can then be turned on in Security app -> Permissions -> Root permission.

  • Redmi Note with stable MIUI ROM (JHECNBA17.0 / JHDCNBA17.0;  JHDCNBE23.0 / JHECNBE23.0)
  • Developer options activated (in Settings -> About phone tap 5 times on Android version)
  • SD card inserted in your Redmi Note (and properly formatted inside Redmi Note)
  • Stock Android system recovery <3e>

Preparation steps:

  • Download the following two files on your PC (because download via Browser on phone often is not working properly)
    – [only necessary for stable version 23.0] Install_su_RedmiNote.zip (attached below)
    Root_RedmiNote.zip (attached below)
  • Connect your Redmi Note via USB, choose ‘Files’ mode from notification shade for ‘Connected via USB’
  • Copy the files Install_su_RedmiNote.zip and Root_RedmiNote.zip to the folder ‘Computer\HM Note 1TD\SD card’ (root of external SD card)
  • Disconnect your Redmi Note properly from PC (use ‘Safely remove hardware…’)

Install_su_RedmiNote.zip (192.57 KB)
Root_RedmiNote.zip (1.29 MB, Downloads: 871)

Perform the following steps for stable MIUI version 23.0 first with the file Install_su_RedmiNote.zip and then again with the file Root_RedmiNote.zip (it is even not required to reboot after updating the first file). For stable MIUI version 17.0 it is only required to perform the steps once with the file Root_RedmiNote.zip

Update steps:

  • Launch Updater app, press menu/options button and from menu choose ‘Reboot to recovery mode’
  • After reboot into recovery a picture of an Android lying in repair mode is shown, press the Power button to show the recovery menu
  • Navigate in the recovery menu with button ‘Volume Down’ until the entry ‘apply update from sdcard‘ is highlighted and press ‘Volume Up’ button to select the entry
  • Select during first cycle the file Install_su_RedmiNote.zip (during second cycle through the steps the file Root_RedmiNote.zip) which you copied before to your SD card: again navigate with button ‘Volume Down’, select with ‘Volume Up’
  • Some output is shown during the update describing the progress
  • After successful update navigate back to the main menu of the recovery
  • Select ‘reboot system now’

Post check and activation steps:

  • Check that in Settings -> About phone the MIUI version number x got extended by adding x.1
  • Go to Security app -> Permission and activate Root permission
  • Enjoy your rooted Xiaomi Redmi Note

European smartphone market fragments

The top two smartphone manufacturers, Apple and Samsung, are increasingly being challenged in Europe as a result of market fragmentation across the region, according to new research.

The latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, covering the three months to April 2014, showed that major brands are facing increased competition from smaller manufacturers vying for position within this lucrative market.

Lesser-known players and revitalised brands are both now gaining “real traction”, according to Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

“Established brands like Motorola and Sony are showing resurgence, and newcomers to the European market, such as Huawei and Wiko, are challenging the established names,” he said.

Huawei, the Chinese manufacturer, saw its smartphone sales rise by 123% in the big five European markets – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK – in the past year. It now holds an average market share of 3%, rising to 5% in Germany and Spain.

French brand Wiko also enjoyed triple-digit growth across Europe, and now has an 8% share in its home country, with further expansion planned across the continent, including into the UK.

Kantar noted that the British market has yet to experience the high levels of fragmentation witnessed elsewhere in Europe, but the entry of Wiko could potentially change that.

Sunnebo further observed that Europe and the US were starting to follow some common trends from other parts of the world, where there was a separation of tariffs and handsets.

“Consumers are starting to realise the true cost of handsets, and as a result they are shopping around to find cheaper alternatives,” he said.

“This shift in behaviour plays directly into the hands of lesser-known brands like Huawei and Wiko, who are able to offer competitive technologies for a fraction of the price.”

In China, the world’s largest smartphone market, local vendor Xiaomi outsold Samsung for the second time in April 2014.

Xiaomi RedMi, the company’s budget handset, was the top-selling smartphone in the country, with 41% of buyers acquiring their first ever smartphone and another 23% switching from Samsung.

CMApps allows any Android device to experience CyanogenMod

If you have an Android device and want some of the applications that are preloaded on CyanogenMod ROMs, then we’ve got an app for you. CMApps takes the hassle from rooting and allows you to have some of the popular CyanogenMod apps on your phone. With this application, you don’t need to worry about unlocking, rooting or ROMing your device. You simply download the CMApps application from the Google Play Store and gain access to some of the apps preloaded on CyanogenMod ROMs.

The applications that come with this app are Apollo (a music player), Camera Next, Clock Widget, DSP Manager, File Manager, Sound Recorder, Calculator, Torch, Trebuchet (the launcher that CyanogenMod uses by default) and Wallpapers. The app is available on the Google Play Store for free. It will only run on Android devices running 4.2 and newer, so realize that it might not work on all of your devices. The app basically works as an installer. You can pick and choose the apps that you’d like to install. Keep in mind that if you want to install the Camera app, you need to be running on Android KitKat 4.4.
