[REVIEW] Hands on with the AVANTEK 20000mAh Dual-Port External Battery Pack

Avantek UK has been kind enough to send this power bank, for a review. This is not by any means a biased review.

Avantek UK are a Hong Kong based company that distributes it’s products through Amazon, both in the UK and the US.

The first time I saw the box, before actually opening it, I thought : “Wow, this thing is too bulky !!!”.

But after opening a very nice box, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the battery, it’s about the size of a laptop battery.

The Avantek 20000 mAh battery pack’s build is really impressive. Considering the high capacity and low price, it would be easy for one to assume that build quality is where Avantek would’ve cut corners, but that really isn’t the case.

The battery has a very nice gloss white finish, which really feels great in the hands. The whole unit looks very solid, premium and well built.

I have used the battery pack for a week almost every day. I’ve charged it overnight with the provided charger a week ago and have used it, as I already said for a week and the blue led indicator still shows I have 25% left of juice. I have used it to keep my charge on my phone (OnePlus One) and on my tablet (HP Touchpad). The power bank just works.

To use it, you only have to plug in a USB cable, one end to the power bank and the other to your phone/other device. Depending on how much juice is left in the power bank and the device that is to be charged, the power bank will start sending current to charge your connected 1 or 2 devices at the same time. I thought the battery will get warm while in use, but even with both my phone and my tablet connected the battery was still cold to the touch.

This 20000 mAh power bank costs less than £35, which I think it’s great value for money. For the price you’ll manage to keep your chosen device(s) powered for a week, and this is quite a feat, considering most devices don’t last a day.

Head over to Avantek’s Amazon shop to get one today.

Security warning: Mediatek-based phones could be facing a potential security hole

French blogger Korben has discovered that certain smartphones with Mediatek chipsets seem to shut down and reset themselves upon receiving an equals symbol “=” (without the quotation marks) via text message.

This is not so much a security hole in that there is a risk of data being compromised, but it makes phones vulnerable to remote attacks because being repeatedly spammed with the equals symbol could render a user’s phone unusable, or receiving such a text message during a phone call could terminate the call.

An incomplete list of smartphones affected by the flaw is available below:

  • Wiko Stairway
  • Wiko Darkmoon
  • Wiko Dark Side
  • Wiko Darknight
  • Wiko Iggy
  • Wiko Ozzy
  • Wiko Darfull
  • Wiko Cink King
  • Wiko Cink Five
  • Wiko Cink Peax
  • Wiko Cink Peax 2
  • Wiko Cink Slim
  • Alcatel One Touch Idol X
  • Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra
  • Alcatel One Touch 997D
  • Alcatel One Touch Pop C3 (4033D)
  • Alcatel One Touch S-Pop (4030D)
  • Alcaltel One Touch Star (6010D)
  • Zopo ZP950
  • Acer Liquid E 2 DUO
  • Fairphone
  • Archos 40 Titanium

You can test if your own Mediatek-based smartphone is susceptible by messaging an equals symbol to yourself.

According to the blog wiity, the solution to this is fairly simple, in that all the user has to do is download an alternative messaging app to handle SMS messages rather than use the standard one that comes with the phones. Still, this is an extremely strange flaw that could prove to be a major hassle if an attacker attempts to exploit it.

Korben discusses and demonstrates the flaw in the video below:
