CWM Touch Recovery v6.0.3.6 for Redmi 1S WCDMA

CWM (ClockworkMod) recovery is a custom recovery which offers much more features compared to the original MI-Recovery 2.0.1 of Redmi 1S.

This is not my work, all credits go to @brainfog (who is user the1024 from Russion 4PDA forum).
I am just adding explanations how to test and install the CWM Touch Recovery v6.0.3.6 for Redmi 1S WCDMA by providing different ways according to user needs and an easy way to revert back to MI-Recovery.

Thanks a lot to @46995103 for giving the hint to this recovery and to @gtiu,  @punkthemonk and @philip_petev for testing and providing screenshots.

List of most important features:

  • Menu navigation: navigate up by pressing Volume Up or swiping up, navigate down by pressing Volume Down or swiping down, select a menu item by pressing Power or swiping right, go back in menu hierarchy by swiping left
  • Installation of zip files without signature verification from SD card or sideload
  • Factory reset
  • Wipe of Cache and Dalivik Cache partitions
  • Backup of Boot, Recovery, System, Data and Android Secure partitions
  • Restore of backups

Known restrictions:

  • Mounting of USB and Internal Memory not working
  • Charging not working
  • Using CWM zip files can not be installed from internal memory
  • The Internal Memory is affected by the features Wipe Data, Backup and Restore because on Redmi 1S the Internal Memory is integrated within the Data partition (/data/media/0)

Caution:

This is a safe process, but I am not responsible for anything bad that happens to your phone

Below you find 4 step-by-step guides:
1. [for testing purposes] Temporary boot into CWM recovery using PC and fastboot
2. Permanent installation of CWM recovery using PC and fastboot
3. Permanent installation of CWM recovery using Mi-recovery
4. [if necessary] Installation of Stock MI-Recovery 2.0.1

In case any step is unclear, needs refinement or you are encountering issues please reply to this thread.

1. Temporary boot into CWM recovery from PC via fastboot for testing purposes

Prerequisites:

  • Redmi 1S WCDMA
  • Developer options enabled (in Settings -> About phone tap 5 times on Android version)
  • USB debugging enabled in Settings -> Developer options
  • SD card inserted in your Redmi 1S (and properly formatted inside Redmi 1S)
  • adb and fastboot drivers installed on your PC (use adb-setup from here, others might also work)
  • file cwm_hm1s.zip (attached)
     cwm_hm1s.zip (9.06 MB)

Steps:

  • Boot your Redmi 1S into fastboot mode: with the phone switched off press the Volume DOWN and POWER buttons at the same time
  • Connect your Redmi to PC via USB cable
  • Download the file cwm_hm1s.zip to your PC and extract it to the folder where fastboot.exe is located
  • Open a command prompt in the directory where fastboot.exe is located
  • Enter the following in the command prompt to temporary boot your Redmi 1S with the CWM recovery
    1. fastboot boot cwm_hm1s.img

    Copy the Code

  • Wait until CWM has booted and start testing the CWM features
  • After you have finished testing you use ‘reboot system now’ from CWM main menu

2. Permanent installation of CWM recovery from PC via fastboot

Prerequisites:

  • same as for 1. above

Steps (same as for 1. above, only difference is in step 5)

5. Enter the following in the command prompt to install the CWM recovery permanently

  1. fastboot flash recovery cwm_hm1s.img

Copy the Code

3. Permanent installation of CWM using MI-Recovery 2.0.1

Prerequisites:

  • Redmi 1S WCDMA
  • Stock MI-Recovery 2.0.1
  • SD card inserted in your Redmi 1S (and properly formatted inside Redmi 1S)
  • file signed_cwm_update.zip (attached)
     signed_cwm_update.zip (9.1 MB)

Steps:

  • Download the file signed_cwm_update.zip to your PC (because download via browser on phone often is not working properly) and rename it to update.zip
  • Connect your Redmi 1S via USB
  • Copy the file update.zip to the folder ‘Computer\HM 1S\Internal storage’ (root of internal storage)
  • Disconnect your Redmi 1S properly (‘Safely remove hardware…’)
  • Boot into Mi-Recovery by starting the Updater app, pressing the left options soft key and choosing from menu ‘Reboot to Recovery mode’
  • Select and confirm ‘English’ (or Chinese if you are capable to understand)
  • Select and confirm ‘Install update.zip to System’, this will take a while
  • Select and confirm ‘Reboot’

Next time when you reboot into recovery you will have CWM.

4. Installation of Stock MI-Recovery 2.0.1

Prerequisites:

  • Redmi 1S WCDMA
  • any recovery
  • SD card inserted in your Redmi 1S (and properly formatted inside Redmi 1S)
  • file signed_stock_recovery_update.zip (attached)
     signed_stock_recovery_update.zip (9.75 MB)

Steps:

  • Download the file signed_stock_recovery_update.zip to your PC (because download via browser on phone often is not working properly)
  • Connect your Redmi 1S via USB
  • Copy the file signed_stock_recovery_update.zip  to the folder ‘Computer\HM 1S\Internal storage’ (root of internal storage)
  • Disconnect your Redmi 1S properly (‘Safely remove hardware…’)
  • Boot into your current recovery by starting the Updater app, pressing the left options soft key and choosing from menu ‘Reboot to Recovery mode’
  • Install the file signed_stock_recovery_update.zip  using the respective feature of your recovery
  • Reboot

Next time when you reboot into recovery you will again have the Stock MI-Recovery 2.0.1
